Visit to Sister Jacoba, Visit to Rome: Letter from Francis to Clare

My dear Clare,

I have not heard from you in sometime. I trust you are well in your little garden of San Damiano, the garden of your sisters, and garden of your heart.

I am in Rome! Sister Jacoba has opened her warm home and to be honest she has opened her kitchen to me. She feeds me hot biscuits and cakes with fresh honey. My brothers ask about my vows. They ask what about holy poverty, chastity, and obedience? I smile. God gives rules for man. Man is not here for the rules. We should not let rules determine our heart but ask the rules to guide our heart to greater love.

Anyway, I tell them I am not visiting Sister Jacoba but Brother Jacoba. She is a great brother and should be respected and be treated as such. When she visits our camp she should be welcomed as a brother and brought to me immediately. I know there is a rule about no women visitors. But as I have said, rules are to support the heart and not the heart to support the rule! Someday Brother Jacoba will make my burial shroud and she must be allowed to dress my body. This shroud is my wedding dress. I will be on my way to Paradise. My Lord and I will be finally coming together for all time, never to be apart.

For now, my dear Jacoba and I discuss all the news. She, of course is excited like everyone about our new bishop. A brother is Bishop of Rome! The imagination is on fire with possibilities. With the water of our Lord washing away the obstacles, Heaven and Earth just might come together. She wants to know if I want to go in these days and visit our new bishop? He is just a short carriage ride away. She will make arrangements.

I try to explain, the bishop’s body is strong and his spirit growing. I am weak and recovering. There will be a time and place. For now I enjoy hearing the news. It seems the bishop has an old friend who is a leader of the Jews. They often meet and dine as family. They discuss everything. Of course our Lord, his Mother and Father, all his disciples were Jewish. So it should be completely normal for our bishop to dine and enjoy the friendship of this Rabbi. Jews and Christians should dine with each other often. Instead of hunting down non-believers or those who believe differently, we all should be sitting together. Religious leaders need to do more than have dialogue. They should set the example of finding joy in one another’s company! We should bring gifts, feast, and dance until the great God in every heart is giving, feasting, and dancing. People of all faiths should break bread and be together in silence. The bread and silence will put our violent thoughts to rest and lead us to simple peace.
